Yes it can. Look back at the last century at how fast socialism grew and how discontent the Workers became after massive job loss and homelessness with existing wages falling and benefits vanishing into thin air like a cheap side show magic trick. Capitalism is a violent killer, not always with the bullet but rather the dollar. The conservative and neo-liberal answer: Print more money. Sad really when considering more useful options. This is the 21st century and socialism is still here and working at the base to move for actual change. It will take time and a current review by all groups to work together, each with their own tactic and each from their own ideology.
